Wisconsin Explorers

Why did the first Europeans come to the area that became Wisconsin?

They actually wanted to get to Asia and the Western Ocean.  Many thought the Mississippi River lead to the Western Ocean, but Marquette and Joliet found that it lead to the Gulf of Mexico. They wanted to take shortcuts. They thought North America was close to Asia after they explored the land.  Early explorers like Christopher Columbus thought North America was Asia (India) when they first landed here. Thats how the Indians got there name.

What were the challenges of early travel in Wisconsin for these explorers?

Some of the people (Spanish, British, Native Americans, and Russians) wanted to keep their land private (to themselves) and they hadn't learned much about the land here and they needed to get to know about the Native Americans.  When they were going across rivers, they would have to portage their boats across the land between the rivers.  When they went down the river there were probably rapids.  They went in boats/canoes down rivers instead of walking across the land because the Indians didn't want them on their land because they didn't know them and it would be faster.  They didn't know what the terrain was going to be like so they wouldn't know how to prepare for it.  The Indians didn't want them to travel across their land because they didn't know them.  They didn't know that the land existed as it did and they were really fierce about their land. When they had to carry their boats across the land, they had to be sneaky so as not to be seen.

Who were some of the early explorers that first came to Wisconsin?  What makes each one unique?  Where did each one go/explore?

How did the Native Americans first react to the explorers?

The explorers brought guns with them (like Nicolet) and when they shot them, the Native Americans were afraid.  A lot of Native Americans died because of the diseases that the Europeans brought with them.  They didn't want the French explorers on their land because they didn't know them and they were afraid of the guns.  They were angry because the Europeans came in and interrupted their lifestyles.

How did the lives of the Native Americans change after the explorers came?

It helped, but also did not help them because they learned different  ways of life but it did not help because they lost land. The Europeans traded guns and weapons for beaver pelts.  The Indians had better technologies from the trading.  The Indians were mad because they had to move off the land because the Europeans took it.  Wars were caused because they didn't want each other there.

To add a picture onto the wiki, first, save a copy of the picture on your computer. Then, when editing the wiki page, click on Images and Links on the right hand side of the page. You need to browse for the picture on your computer and upload the picture so it shows up on the list of pictures. Once there, click in the editing screen where you want it placed - your cursor should be in the place you want it. Then click on the image from the list on the right and it should show up for you in the wiki. Make sure you save your changes to the wiki before you view it.
